Looking and hiring the right people is never an easy task. It takes a lot of patience and time to find the talent suitable for a company. Most of the time, we read or we hear that what most organizations look for is someone who will help the company move forward and who will easily adapt and respect the company culture and values. And more than skills, hiring managers will need to look at the attitude, the inbuilt drive, and personal significance to be part of the success of the company- once a competent candidate that has the necessary skill set for the job has been identified.

Hard skills and soft skills are both important when it comes to assessing talent and no skill is more superior to the other once you identify the “must-have” skills. Focusing only on hard skills may lead to silo, discord, and misunderstanding between teams, stakeholders, and leaders in an organization. While focusing only on soft skills may lead to less productivity and works piling up. With that, it is important to find the balance between the two.

But what should one remember when hiring? One thing, “Hire people who DON’T GIVE a DAMN about their CAREER!” The reason being, they will teach you the most.

When hiring, we look for people who are talented in the field, who have a clear view of what they want, but we should also take into account whether that person is career-centered or focused on growth- both for themselves and the organization.

Most of the time employees tend to be conscious and careful about how they speak to their managers or someone who is more senior to them- which may be okay for some aspects, but not always good for the company. The reality is many people in the MNCs are into internal politics; they care too much about how the boss sees them, how their colleagues and peers see them, and how they’ll look when they do something. This is a big hindrance to the company’s growth, mainly because it stops people from voicing out their ideas and asking questions. Therefore, the knowledge and ideas that could have helped the company progress just go to waste- or remain hidden.

What companies really need are people who are ready to speak up; who are ready to challenge the norm; who beg to differ. Someone who stands up for what is right for the company and not only what is best for their career. Sadly only a few organizations have these people and sometimes even if they do, they don’t encourage them as much.

Such talents are hard to come by, they are priceless. Maybe it is time for organizations to reassess and look within their teams because there may be a lot of hidden jewels. Encourage the people to stand up and to speak up. It should be mutual to both the organization and its people. Learning from one another will benefit every party involved. If they are not there, look for them and don’t let that opportunity pass- hire them.

“If you hire only those people you understand, the company will never get people better than you are. Always remember that you often find outstanding people among those you don’t particularly like.” – Soichiro Honda

Building a successful company requires the right talent- not only people who always say yes but also people who really evaluate everything and think of what is best for the company. Hire people who are willing to step up and do good for the company and not only think about their careers.
