By popular demand, our last infographic on the Top 10 World’s Largest Container Ports in 2020, is now updated with a comparison with the Top 10 World’s Largest Container Ports in 2016. And what a difference the four years have made!
According to World Shipping Council data, in 2020, the top 10 ports have increased the overall containers’ turnover by 16%; the top 10 largest ports handled over 35 million TEUs more in 2020 as compared to 2016.
The most remarkable increase in the capacity handled, when looking at 2016 vs. 2020, took place in the port of Ningbo-Zhoushan in China. The container turnover in this port increased by 33% in 2020, as compared to 2016, by handling over 7 more million TEUs in 2020.
Shanghai became the world’s largest and busiest container port in 2010, surpassing Singapore, which used to be for years the largest seaport in the world. The container turnover has increased by 17% in the port of Shanghai, respectively 18% in the port of Singapore since 2016.
With the record high new orders for container vessels in 2020-2021, triggered by high demand, we are expecting to see a significant increase in the capacity handled in the world’s largest ports in 2021. What are your bets? Will the top remain the same?
