Top‌ ‌10‌ ‌‌World’s‌ ‌Largest‌ ‌Container‌ ‌Shipping‌ ‌Companies‌


The ocean freight capacity has been in the limelight for many months now, with container rates skyrocketing, strike in the port of LAX.

Alphaliner real-time ranking is offering a clear picture of the current capacity of the fleet and the number of containers available for ocean transportation. We have listed in this infographic, the top 10 ocean cargo companies, that transport over 90% of the worldwide volumes.

TEU stands for a twenty-foot equivalent unit or a standard 6.1-meter-long shipping container.

Denmark’s APM Maersk has the largest fleet of container ships as well as the highest container capacity of any shipping company; 713 ships in operation with an overall TEU of 4.1 million.

Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, international cargo company MSC has the second-highest TEU capacity with about 3.9 million and has reportedly placed an order at China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) for thirteen 16,000 TEU container vessels, valued in excess of Y10bn ($1.52bn) as per

COSCO and CMA-CGM follow with approximately three million each.

The owner of the popular Ever Given ship, blocking sea traffic over the Suez Canal the last week of March 2021, the Evergreen Line, has 197 ships on its books with a TEU capacity of 1.3 million and takes up the seventh place in the top 10 ocean cargo companies.
